You know, back in my day birds didn’t have a sense of smell. Maybe, maaaaaaaaybe New World vultures did. But no one else.
Now look at this new-fangled tomfoolery: Could Smell Play a Role in the Origin of New Bird Species?

Oh!
Well, crap! That’s amazing. Had it been April 1st, I would have laughed – but it seems we have a revolution of bird ID coming our way.
Just stand down-wind from a forest, hold up your sniff-a-bird electronic device and you’ll get total number of species present, age and sex ratios, number of different individuals etc.
And if people then claim they can actually identify birds by smell, would these birds make it onto their life list?
Like the heard-only’s?
Geez, that IS an amazing find.
And in Canada I cycled to school ten miles in the snow. Against the wind! Both ways!
And that’s actually true.

I definitely believe that. When biking, it’s always against the wind both ways, somehow.
