[...] If you participate in a Christmas count, you may well be tasked with locating and counting rare and restricted-range species. It’s a rather heady assignment– if you miss them, the count may miss them entirely. Fortunately, Carrie is on the case of the Florida Scrub-Jay, as she describes in Black Friday, Part 1: Jay-walking.
Jochen: That story makes me a bit glum, I must say. I can understand wanting a state bird that the people can relate to, but really.... if they won't do the warbler, they can't at least spring for the Common Loon or something?

Nate: They were exactly as advertised. And just wait until you hear about the owls!

John: Developers? Really? That's just downright mean-spirited of them. I didn't think that state bird status even meant that much, restrictions-wise; I thought it was just symbolic legislation.

Birding was a wiser choice than shopping last Friday.

I think Florida's state bird may change in the near future, but it still will not be the Florida Scrub Jay because of pressure from developers.

In 2005, if I remember correctly, there was an intensive online discussion amongst birders in Michigan as to what bird species should be the state's bird.
Of course, the Kirtland's Warbler seemed like the obvious and undisputable option, yet the very vast majority of birders that participated in the online debate had never, ever, in their entire lives, seen a Kirtland's Warbler, let alone seen one in Michigan. Most of those who had Kirtland's on their life list had seen the bird at e.g. Crane Creek, Pelee or other out-of-state migration hot spots.
So in the end - as far as I know - the American Robin was chosen to recieve that honour.
